Summary

The aim of this project is to raise funds to equip a much needed, newly built Operating Theatre in the Orthopedic Unit of a premier tertiary care children’s hospital providing free operations and care. This endeavor will help children having orthopedic deformities and disorders, to correct their condition. Whilst the services are accessible to all Sri Lankan children, those who would benefit most are children from impoverished villages/areas to whom appropriate surgical care is unattainable.

Challenge

In Sri Lanka 70% of 48,000 admissions per annum to this hospital are related to trauma. This premier hospital we wish to support, is the ultimate referral center for Pediatric Orthopedics in Sri Lanka, and handles almost all the complicated Pediatric Orthopedic surgeries, free of charge. A new theatre has been built for these expanded Orthopedic Services, however the necessary equipment and implants are still not available to commence surgeries for affected children with complex deformities.

Solution

This endeavor will help to establish a subspecialty unit of Pediatric Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery to accommodate the full spectrum of pediatric orthopedic conditions at this premier tertiary care children’s hospital in Sri Lanka. This will enable those children who are from low socio economic families having complicated orthopedic issues, to be addressed, and be cured from their deformities and disorders. These children will be given the best chance in life to lead a normal/improved life.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help our Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons at this premier tertiary care children’s hospital in Sri Lanka to help more children with deformities and disorders in a timely manner with minimal delay. It will result in supporting children to whom appropriate surgical care would either be unattainable or non-existent, to lead a long, healthy, and a productive life. So your support will give these children the opportunity to reach their full potential and be contributing citizens.

This project has provided additional documentation in a PDF file.

Summary

Early childhood education is the first stage of a holistic model that creates supportive and constructive learning for children of all ages. Dehiattkandiya, a remote area in the eastern province in Sri Lanka has 65 pre-schools. We supported 25 pre-schools, in early 2020, by donating a pack of educational and communication material to help simulate motor & language skills and also cognitive competencies of pre-school children. Our target is to support the balance 40 pre-schools, by year-end.

Challenge

There is substantial evidence that children from economically disadvantaged families are at a greater risk of poor cognitive development than children from richer households. Furthermore the resulting disadvantages in schooling outcomes lead to lower earnings in adult life. In Sri Lanka, although, Primary and Collegiate Schools are supported by the Government, there is very limited support provided to the pre-schools. The rural pre-schools are affected largely as a result.

Solution

Tarana Foundation, understanding the unavailability of adequate learning material in rural pre-schools, required to develop a child, launched a pilot project, to support the rural pre-schools in Dehiattakandiya. Our initiative helps the rural pre-schools to be equipped with the learning material required for pre-school students.

Long-Term Impact

The provision of high quality Early Child Education for economically disadvantaged children can compensate for the deficiencies they face in their home environment, and ultimately help break the inter-generational cycle of poverty.

TARANA easily surpassed the $5,000 needed from 40 unique donors to be a permanent member on the GlobalGiving.org fund raiser platform a few days into our fund raising.

We increased our target goal to US$25,000 so that we may cover over 3,000 school children’s needs this year as well despite the COVID19 situation affecting the economy.

We sought to go global in our fundraising so that we may cover larger ground especially with the assistance of our friends, relatives and well wishers abroad.

Donation on the GlobalGiving platform gives the donors in the UK and USA special tax benefits as well.

We thank all our donors in Sri Lanka and Abroad whose generosity helped us achieve this 1st mile stone on the Global Giving platform.

If you wish to take part in this noble mission to help rural communities please donate any amount of choice on the Global Giving platform -Tarana Foundation Page. The Global Giving fundraiser runs for another 14 days before the campaign ends.

Your assistance will help us to continue to carry out School Packs, sports goods distribution, construction of wells, tubewells, storage tanks and washrooms for rural schools and communities for 2020/2021.

In addition to doing our signature program of helping rural school children with stationery, bag & shoe school packs we are especially focusing on Clean Water & Sanitation requirements this year in view of the covid19 pandemic and also as it forms one of the Goal pillars (Clean Water & Sanitation) on which the Tarana Foundation is set up.

We thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness in helping those in need, may the merits bring blessings in abundance to you and your family.

Tarana Foundation has registered for the GlobalGiving Accelerator Program launched on the 8th of June 2020. Campaign will run from the 8th of June till the 26th of June. We have put forward our project on “Support Rural Schools in Sri Lanka” for this campaign and wish to raise USD 10,000 towards the rural schools project to be done in December 2020. The funds will be utilised towards

We have a challenge to raise atleast USD 5,000 from at least 40 donors in this campaign to be eligible for permanent membership of the GlobalGiving platform.
